Best Time to Visit the White Desert, Egypt

Travellers ask me this almost every day on WhatsApp: “When should we come?” After twenty years of camping in the White Desert in every month of the year, here is the honest answer.

October to April: the best months

This is when I recommend almost everyone travel. Daytime temperatures sit comfortably between 20–28°C, which makes the 4x4 exploring and short walks among the chalk formations genuinely enjoyable rather than exhausting. Nights are cool, sometimes cold, which is exactly what makes camping under the stars so memorable — you’ll want the blankets we provide, and the clear, dry desert air gives some of the best stargazing conditions in Egypt.

December and January are the coolest and busiest months, so if you want the same conditions with a quieter camp, aim for late October, November, February or March.

May to September: possible, with planning

Summer in the White Desert is hot — daytime temperatures regularly pass 38–40°C. It is still doable, and some of my guests specifically want the empty desert and dramatic heat-haze light that summer brings, but we adjust the schedule: earlier starts, more time in shade around midday, and camp set up well before the heat peaks. If you’re travelling in summer, tell us early so we can plan the day around the temperature rather than against it.

What doesn’t change year-round

• Nights are cold in the desert in every season — pack a warm layer even in July
• Sunrise and sunset light on the chalk formations is spectacular all year
• We run tours 365 days a year — there is no closed season

My recommendation

If your travel dates are flexible, aim for November, February or March — comfortable temperatures, cool clear nights, and a quieter desert than the December-January peak. If you can only travel in summer, don’t rule it out; just let us build the itinerary around the heat.
